Early 18th Century Provincial Joined Oak Coffer or Blanket Chest - This early 18th century provincial joined oak coffer, also known as a blanket chest, is constructed using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with visible wood pegs. The primary wood is oak, displaying characteristic quartersawn grain and medullary rays under a dark, aged patina. The front is composed of three raised rectangular panels set within a heavy frame. The lid consists of large planks, and the interior framing shows chamfered edges typical of period joinery. The chest features two hand-forged wrought iron strap hinges with flared, butterfly-style ends. A central keyhole is present on the front rail, although the decorative escutcheon is missing. No maker marks or labels were identified on the visible surfaces. The interior floor has been fitted with a modern white textured protective lining.
