”The institutions administered by my son-in-law, Harav Rasha”g [Harav R. S. Gurary] shlita , and my son-in-law, Harav Hagaon Harama”mash shlita (the Rebbe).” A historic, intriguing and moving letter from the Rebbe Rayatz concerning his health and strengthening religious observance and Chabad institutions. New York, Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5706 [1946]. An exceptionally rare letter bearing the handwritten signature of the Rebbe Rayatz, Harav Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn of Lubavitch. ”In strengthening Judaism and ahavas Yisrael , and regarding the community of ana”sh... ” In the letter, the Rebbe writes about his health and the strengthening religious observance and the Chabad institutions. He also writes about his occupation with answering the letters he receives, and further on, among other things, he mentions the management of the holy institutions: ”The institutions administered by my son-in-law, Harav Rasha”g shlita , and my son-in-law, Harav Hagaon Harama”mash shlita [the Rebbe], who manage them according to their understanding, and may Hashem Yisbarach grant material and spiritual success.” The letter appears to be hinting that he is designating the Rebbe [Harav Menachem Mendel Schneerson] as his successor. The prominent manner in which the Rayatz refers to the Rebbe indicates that the Rayatz had set his holy eyes upon him, intending to appoint him as his successor. The letter was sent to Professor Fishel Schneerson. Brooklyn, Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5706 (1946). 14/13.5 cm. Thin paper, typewritten and signed by the Rebbe Rayatz in his own hand. Fold mark and light stains. Overall Condition: Good - Very Good. The Rebbe Harav Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn – the Rayatz [1880/1950] was the sixth Rebbe in the Chabad-Lubavitch dynasty, son of the Rebbe the Rashab. Due to the Communist persecution of Judaism, he secretly established a network of Talmud Torahs and yeshivas throughout the Soviet Unon, and devoted himself extensively to the dissemination of Judaism. On 15 Sivan, 1927, his activities were uncovered, and he was arrested by the authorities. There is a well-known story that during one of his interrogations, the interrogator pointed a gun at him and said, ”This toy has changed the minds of many.” The Rebbe replied, ”This toy can intimidate someone who has one world and many gods, but one who has one G-d and two worlds is not frightened by this toy at all.” Following international pressure, the death sentence was revoked and commuted to exile. On 12 Tamuz, he was informed of his complete release. Since then, Chabad chassidim commemorate 12-13 Tamuz as the ”Holiday of Redemption.” The Rayatz purchased the famous ”770” building, established Kfar Chabad in Eretz Yisrael, and instituted the study of Chitas — a daily portion of Chumash with Rashi's commentary, daily Tehillim, and daily Tanya. The famous Rebbe of Chabad, Harav Menachem Mendel Schneerson, was his son-in-law. Rav Yehoshua Fishel Schneerson [1888–1958] was the son of Harav Shneur Zalman Schneerson, Rav of Homel and Starodub, who was the son of the Rebbe Harav Shalom Ber of Rechytsa, who was the son of the Rebbe Harav Yehudah Leib of Kopust, who was the son of the Rebbe the Tzemach Tzedek. His father, Harav Shneur Zalman Schneerson, had an encyclopedic knowledge of Chabad writings and was a treasure trove of Chasidic stories and the like that he had personally heard throughout his lifetime. Rav Yehoshua Fishel specialized in philosophy and the sciences, particularly psychology, and devoted his life to caring for children with special needs and disabilities. Upon his immigration to Eretz Yisrael, he worked to promote Shabbos observance and religious observance. He authored numerous books. Chassidim say that when the Rayatz's doctors recommended that he share his feelings with a friend, he chose Rav Yehoshua Fishel.
