TOM SCOTT, Scottish (1854-1927), ‘A Caithness Crofter’, watercolour, signed LR: Tom Scott, labelled and inscribed verso, and dated April 1912, 36cm x 52cm A Scottish crofter resolutely walks behind his grey working horse and plough, under a fine early spring sun, the sea with a distant hint of smoke in the background, perhaps a passing ship heading to safe harbour in Orkney. This is Tom Scott at his finest, capturing the toil of Scottish farming and the grandeur of its endlessly changing landscapes.
