Hollywood Regency Low Coffee Table with Polychromed Top, circa 1940s - A Hollywood Regency giltwood low table with an incised polychrome painted top, circa 1940s. The top is decorated on a dark ground with asymmetrical floral, foliate and geometric motifs, including blooming flowers, insects, abstract forms and central still-life reserves with floral arrangements in vessels. The painted decoration is incised throughout, giving the surface added texture and definition. The giltwood base is carved with an undulating apron, centered on each side by a shell-form ornament, and raised on cabriole legs with pronounced knees. The gilding is worn through in areas to reveal the red bole and gesso beneath, giving the table a warm, layered surface. A highly decorative and individual low table, balancing painted surface, carved form and practical use. 52 1/2 in. W x 26 3/4 in. D x 16 in. H
