Hendrik Frans Schaefels, “An Artist and His Muse,” 1856 - Hendrik Frans Schaefels, “An Artist and His Muse, ” 1856 Hendrik Frans Schaefels, Belgian, 1827–1904. Oil on panel, signed and dated lower right “Hendrik Schaefels 1856.” Interior genre scene depicting an artist at his easel with a young woman beside him. The reverse retains an early handwritten label, largely illegible, with “1856” visible, along with old gallery labels. Schaefels trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and is best known for marine, historical and genre subjects. His work is represented in museum collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, RISD Museum, Smart Museum of Art, National Maritime Museum, London, and Antwerp collections. Panel: 11 1/2 in.
