Civil War G.A.R. Colonel Patrick O'Rorke badge lot - Post No. 1 and Monroe County Veterans Assn. - GAR lot that includes two Patrick O'Rorke related  Badges. The 1st is an O'Rorke Post No. 1, Rochester, New York Membership badge that features a 1.75” diameter image of O'Rorke. The badge is missing the bottom fringe and is in two pieces with 3 large splits in the bottom third of the ribbon. The second badge is an image of O'Rorke encased in a 5th Army Corps Badge brass drop with the wording Civil War Monroe County Veterans Assn. July 1913.  This badge was most likely attached to a ribbon and could have been worn at the Battle of Gettysburg 50th Anniversary Reunion held in July 1913.  This lot is part of the G.A.R. personal effects of George S. Burke who served in Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery and Co. C, 1st New York Veteran Volunteer Cavalry. Burke was a resident of Barnard - Rochester, New York. He initially belonged to the New York G.A.R. Post No. 1 (O'Rorke Post) of Rochester, New York and was still listed as a member of that post in 1899. At some point he joined the Myron Adams Post No. 84 which was chartered in 1896. Please see lot 2232 for Burke's engraved G.A.R. Cemetery Division Chief badge and calling card for the Myron Adams Post. O'Rorke Post No. 1 was named after Patrick O'Rorke, Colonel of the 140th New York Volunteers. It was the first G.A.R. post established in the state of New York. Colonel O'Rorke, an Irish Immigrant, graduated 1st in his Class in June 1861 from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was killed on July 2, 1863 leading his regiment in a charge down the south slope of Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg. In-house shipping available.
