Civil War G.A.R. Type V Membership Badge - Departmental Officer - MFG 1895 - GAR Type V membership badge with the rank bar positioned at the center of the ribbon indicating the member is a former officer. The red border of the ribbon and black ground of the miniature shoulder strap indicate the officer had served at the Department level and the oak leaves indicate that he had held the rank of aide de camp to the department commander at the departmental level. The back of the eagle features the Type V campfire scene and ”Pat May 4, 1886 June 22, 1886”. This badge is numbered L9268 on one of the edges of the star. On the Type V badges, the only year that featured the ”L” prefix on the edge number was 1895. This badge is in overall excellent condition. This lot is part of the G.A.R. personal effects of George S. Burke who served in Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery and Co. C, 1st New York Veteran Volunteer Cavalry. Burke was a resident of Barnard - Rochester, New York. He initially belonged to the New York G.A.R. Post No. 1 (O'Rorke Post) of Rochester, New York and was still listed as a member of that post in 1899. At some point he joined the Myron Adams Post No. 84 which was chartered in 1896.
