Civil War G.A.R. Type IVa Membership Badge - Former Post Commander MFG 1882 - 1883 - GAR Type IVa membership badge with the rank bar positioned at the center of the ribbon indicating the member is a former officer. The blue border of the ribbon and blue ground of the miniature shoulder strap indicate the officer had served at the Post level and the eagle indicates that he had held the rank of Post Commander. This badge is numbered V51699 on one of the edges of the star. On the Type IVa badges, the only years that featured the ”V” prefix on the edge number were 1882-1883. This badge is in overall excellent condition. This lot is part of the G.A.R. personal effects of George S. Burke who served in Battery L, 1st New York Light Artillery and Co. C, 1st New York Veteran Volunteer Cavalry. Burke was a resident of Barnard - Rochester, New York. He initially belonged to the New York G.A.R. Post No. 1 (O'Rorke Post) of Rochester, New York and was still listed as a member of that post in 1899. At some point he joined the Myron Adams Post No. 84 which was chartered in 1896.
