The buttons exhibit a range of materials including brass, bronze, silver-toned metals, mother-of-pearl, iridescent shell, black polished material (possibly jet, vulcanite, or early plastic), and carved red material (likely early plastic or resin). Some buttons feature faceted accents resembling cut steel or glass. Styles vary from ornate floral and foliate motifs, often with relief or inlaid details, to geometric patterns and abstract designs, suggesting a period spanning late 19th to early 20th century. small button features a shield with group of figures, text ”EXCELSIOR” (Latin for ”Ever Upward,” the motto of New York State), and ”N.Y.S.” (New York State).
