The buttons are crafted from base metals, likely brass or bronze, and feature contrasting finishes of gilt (gold-toned) and darker, patinated or oxidized metal. Motifs are diverse, including pictorial and naturalistic scenes such as various species of birds (herons, pheasants, and songbirds), intricate floral designs, and some heraldic or allegorical imagery, often rendered in detailed relief. button notably incorporates blue enamel accents. Handwritten notations on the reverse of the mounting board include ”B.B. #1-136 #2 20-C,” suggesting a collector's cataloging and indicating a 20th-century origin for at least some of the pieces.
