Civil War CDV Frederick Starring Colonel 72nd Illinois Inf. & Creator of the G.A.R. Membership Badge - Civil War Cdv of Frederick A. Starring, Colonel of the 72nd Illinois Infantry and creator of the G.A.R. membership badge. Also included with this CDV is the November/December issue of Military Images in which this CDV View of Colonel Starring is featured on  the cover. The article discusses his military career and the creation of the G.A.R. badge. Starring was commissioned Colonel of the 72nd Illinois Infantry in August 1862. He led his regiment in the fighting at Vicksburg. In May 1869, Starring was appointed Inspector General of the G.A.R. and charged with designing the organization's membership badge. The badge was formally adopted at the 1869 National Encampment held at New York City. Frederick Starring received G.A.R. badge no. 1.  Please see lot # 162  for an albumen of Frederick's younger brother William S. Starring who served out West during the Indian Wars and is best known for co authoring a Sioux Indian Dictionary.
