A Late 19th-Century Mother-of-Pearl Patriotic American Flag Coat Button - This late 19th-century patriotic coat button, dating to circa 1898, is constructed with a carved white mother-of-pearl American flag appliqué mounted on an iridescent smoky mother-of-pearl circular base. The button features a decorative carved rope-twist border around the circumference. The item is presented on a white mounting board that includes descriptive documentation and reference images relating the design to the battleship USS Maine. This specimen is an example of the patriotic buttons popular during the Spanish-American War era.
