Bidspirit auction | A Pair of American Folk

A Pair of American Folk Art Watercolor Miniature Portraits, Attributed to Athens County, Ohio, Circa 1815 - This pair of American folk art miniature portraits, executed in watercolor and gouache on paper, depicts a man and a woman in a primitive style. The female subject is shown in a green dress with a gold-tone necklace and pendant, while the male subject is depicted in a dark jacket with a high white cravat and waistcoat. The portraits are set within oval reserves on rectangular paper. The works are housed in simple mitered wood frames with glass fronts and solid wood backings held by small metal tacks. One wood backing panel features faint pencil markings, and a name is inscribed on the wood panel for the man. These pieces are attributed to Athens County, Ohio. The style of the portraits is consistent with the work of 19th-century itinerant artists of the period, resembling the flat, linear style found in works by artists such as William Kennedy or Rufus Porter. Paper portraits: 3.5 inches by 4 inches. Burns in-house shipping is available.
