A Pair of 1940 Ohio Stamped Metal License Plates, U-972 - This is a matched pair of stamped metal automotive license plates from the state of Ohio, dated 1940. Each plate is constructed from heavy-gauge steel with embossed characters and a raised border. The plates feature a dark blue background with off-white or cream-colored painted accents on the raised portions. Centered in the upper half is the registration number U-972, featuring a small embossed dot between the letter prefix and numerical sequence. The bottom of the plates is embossed with the text OHIO - 1940. The reverse side of each plate displays the negative indentation resulting from the stamping process. The two plates are currently joined together by thin wire threaded through the mounting holes. In 1940, Ohio used letter prefixes to designate specific registration classes or counties.
