A Collection of Type I Original Open-Wheel Auto Racing Photographs by Smith's Racing Photos 1948 - This collection consists of Type I original black and white silver gelatin photographs produced by Smith's Racing Photos of Columbus, Ohio. The images provide a comprehensive visual record of mid-20th-century American open-wheel auto racing, specifically featuring midget and sprint cars on regional dirt tracks. The subject matter includes formal driver portraits, candid shots of pit crews, high-action racing sequences, and dramatic crash scenes. Identified drivers featured in the collection include Bob O'Neil, Wally Stokes, Bob Terry, Frankie Luptour, George Tichenor, Bill McGee, Al Funderburk, Hank Miller, Jackie LaVan, Hyatt Ward, and Al Johnson. Key locations documented include Heidelberg Raceway in Heidelberg, Pennsylvania, and tracks in Circleville and London, Ohio. The majority of the items are specifically dated to May and June of 1948. photographs bear the stamped mark on the reverse: Smith’s Racing Photos, W. H. SMITH, 1414 1/2 N. 5TH ST., COLUMBUS, OHIO, WA 4775. Additional notations credit the C.S.P.A. (Central States Promoters Association) staff photographer. A notable item in the group is a photograph of driver Wally Stokes which includes a pasted-on newspaper clipping detailing his death in a 1949 highway accident. The collection is accompanied by original negatives for of the images. These negatives are housed in their original brown sleeves, which contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative. Newer manilla envelopes included in the lot were used to organize the contents and contain handwritten information regarding locations and dates. x 10 inches.
