A Collection of Original 1947 Midget Auto Racing Photographs and Negatives by Smiths Racing Photos - This archival collection consists of original Type I black and white photographs documenting the 1947 midget auto racing season in the American Midwest. The images were produced by Smiths Racing Photos, the studio of W.H. Smith and Worley and Mary Ellen Smith based in Columbus, Ohio. The collection features a mix of action shots, starting lineups, and individual driver portraits captured at historic venues including Powell Speedway, Winchester Speedway, Newark, Ashland, and the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Identified drivers include Norm Houser, Frankie Luptow, Spider Webb, George Metzler, Joe Langley, Cal Clark, Suede Carpenter, Bob Grimm, Barry Hinnershitz, Shorty Drexler, Buck Barr, Orville Epperly, and Hal Robson. photographs are accompanied by their original brown paper negative sleeves which contain the original film negatives. These original sleeves contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative, including location, date, and production data. The reverse of photographs features the Smiths Racing Photos studio stamp and reproduction rights notices. Any newer manila envelopes present were used for organization and are empty. photograph includes a contemporary newspaper clipping regarding George Metzler tipped onto the reverse.
