A Collection of Type I Original Racing Photographs by Smith's Racing Photos 1948 - This collection consists of Type I original black-and-white photographic prints documenting mid-century American open-wheel racing. The images primarily feature midget and sprint cars on the Ohio racing circuit during April and May of 1948. The photographs were produced by Smith's Racing Photos, operated by W. H. Smith at 1414 1/2 N. 5th St., Columbus, Ohio, as evidenced by ink stamps on the reverse of prints. Subject matter includes driver portraits in cockpits, action shots on dirt tracks, engine details, and pit area scenes. Identified drivers include Duke Nalon, Jackie Holmes, Wayne Wynn, Kilroy Horner, Charles Van Acker, Spider Webb, Wally Stokes, Carl Scarborough, Fred Provin, Bob O'Neil, Johnnie Shackleford, Bill Bastello, Elmer Nelson, Bob Haner, and M.L. Funderburk. Locations depicted include Greenville, Dayton, and Celina, Ohio, as well as Heidelberg, Pennsylvania. photographs are accompanied by their original negatives housed in brown paper envelopes. These original sleeves contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative. Any newer manilla envelopes present are empty and were used to organize the lot, often bearing location and date information. Many prints feature handwritten identification in red ink on small adhesive labels applied to the front corners or edges. 8 x 10 inches (approximate per print). Pickup is Wednesday, April 22 from 10 am to 3 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
