A Collection of Type I Original Vintage Open-Wheel Racing Photographs by Smiths Racing Photos - This collection consists of Type I original black and white photographs documenting mid-century midget and sprint car racing in the American Midwest. Produced by W.H. Smith of Smiths Racing Photos in Columbus, Ohio, the images span from 1948 to 1964, with a concentration on the years 1961 and 1962. The subjects include high-speed track action, pit scenes, and winner's circle portraits from various venues including Ottawa, Marion, Wilmington, and Powell, Ohio, as well as Heidelberg, Pennsylvania. Identified drivers and subjects include Tommy Gray, Buddy Martin, Mike Nemer, Sam Stockton, Richard Lee, Pete Burnett and family, Russ Royce, W. Wildhaber, Paul Hooper, Flip Davis, Jack O'Roark, Dick Northern, and Bill Harter. The photographs are housed in clear plastic sleeves; the original sleeves contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative. photograph of Tommy Gray (Heidelberg, PA, 1948) includes its original negative housed in a brown kraft envelope attached to the reverse. Markings on the reverse include ink stamps for Smiths Racing Photos with addresses at 1386 N. 4th St. and 1414 1/2 N. 5th St. in Columbus, Ohio. Many examples feature adhesive identification labels on the front with reference numbers, locations, and dates. x 10 inches.
