Archive of 70+ Type I Original Midget Auto Racing Negatives by Smiths Racing Photos, Powell Speedway, Ohio, 1947-1948 - This archive consists of + Type I original large-format black-and-white negatives documenting the golden age of midget auto racing at Powell Speedway in Powell, Ohio. The collection was produced by Smiths Racing Photos and covers specific race events held on September 14, 1947, October 5, 1947, and August 21, 1948. The negatives are primarily housed in their original paper and glassine sleeves. These original sleeves contain extensive notes about the contained photo and/or negative, including identifications for drivers Jimmie Welburn, Al Shaffer, and Ben Music, as well as Bernice Kelly. Photographic subjects captured in the archive include track action on the dirt oval, flagmen at the start/finish line, winner's circle ceremonies featuring Al Jacksons Fisher Special, and the elevated announcer's stand decorated with patriotic bunting. Technical notations on the sleeves indicate the use of a Busch Pressman camera and Ansco Superpan Press film stock. The lot includes newer manila envelopes used to organize the contents by location and date, as well as modern-era photographic reference prints developed from the negatives. Pickup is Wednesday, April 22 from 10 am to 3 pm at our gallery in Lancaster, Ohio 43130 or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
