Bidspirit auction | Primitive Blue Painted Wood Chest

Primitive Blue Painted Wood Chest Constructed from Repurposed Heinz Catsup Shipping Crate Wood - This primitive utilitarian storage chest dates from the late 19th to early 20th century and is constructed from pine boards with an older blue-gray painted finish. The interior of the chest remains unpainted, revealing the natural aged wood. A distinguishing characteristic is the inclusion of a repurposed wood panel from an H.J. Heinz Company shipping crate, used as a support brace on the interior of the lid. This board retains original black stenciled markings that read H. J. HEINZ CO. PITTSBURGH CATSUP along with the phrase MANUFACTURED AND GUARANTEED. The lid is attached using large iron strap hinges on the interior and two smaller iron hinges on the exterior back. For security, the front has an iron hasp and staple. The corners and edges are reinforced with riveted iron bands. Substantial iron bail handles are fixed to each side. Length: 21.5 inches.
