19th-Century American Broad Hatchet Heads including Simmons and Co. - This lot consists of antique American broad hatchet heads, traditionally used for hewing timber or in cooperage work. A head is a documented example manufactured by Simmons and Co. of Cohoes, New York. It is constructed of cast steel and features a clear maker mark stamped into the poll reading SIMMONS and CO. COHOES-N.Y. along with the quality marks CAST STEEL and WARRANTED. The second head is unmarked but follows a similar broad-bit pattern, constructed from forged steel. Both items are presented as individual components and are missing their original wooden handles. Simmons and Co. Head: 7.5 inches across the bit, 6 inches from poll to bit. Unmarked Head: 7.5 inches across the bit. Burns in-house shipping is available.
