Roster Commission. Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio. Various, 1886-1887. - A collection of volumes titled Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866. This series was compiled under the direction of the Roster Commission, which consisted of Governor Joseph B. Foraker, Secretary of State James S. Robinson, and Adjutant-General H.A. Axline. The volumes were published by authority of the General Assembly and produced by multiple regional printers, including Wilstach, Baldwin and Company of Cincinnati and The Werner Printing and Manufacturing Company of Akron, with publication dates ranging from 1886 to 1887. The volumes are bound in publisher's quarter leather with textured cloth boards in blue or green. The spines feature gilt-stamped titles, volume numbers, and decorative horizontal bands. The interior of the volumes consists of tabular rosters documenting the service records of various Ohio volunteer infantry regiments, detailing soldiers' names, ranks, ages, dates of service, and biographical remarks. Included in this collection are volumes covering a broad range of units, from the 1st through the 184th regiments. Several volumes contain a printed association label from the Adjutant General’s Department, Columbus, dated 1887. These labels identify the books as being issued to Post No. 583, Department of Ohio, of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and bear the printed signature of H.A. Axline, Adjutant General.
