A Pair of American Encaustic Tiling Company 1926 Art Pottery Cherub and Rabbit Bookends - This is a pair of art pottery bookends produced by the American Encaustic Tiling Company (AETCO) in Zanesville, Ohio. The bookends are crafted from earthenware and feature a molded bas-relief design of a nude cherub or putto standing on one leg while holding a textured garland. A small rabbit is seated at the cherub's feet. The form consists of a semi-circular base with a stepped, rounded backplate. The base is finished with a repeating border of stylized leaf or petal motifs. Both pieces are covered in a dark green-black mottled crystalline glaze. One bookend displays a more pronounced brownish-bronze iridescence on its flat horizontal and vertical surfaces, which is a common variation resulting from the firing of crystalline glazes. The reverse of each bookend bears the impressed circular mark containing the interlaced characters of the AETCO logo, with the date 1926 centered below. Width: 5 inches Height: 5.5 inches.
