Bidspirit auction | Antique Haudenosaunee Iroquois Style Beaded

Antique Haudenosaunee Iroquois Style Beaded Heart-Shaped Whimsey - This heart-shaped beaded object is characteristic of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) artistry, specifically the types of whimsies produced for the souvenir trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The item is constructed with a tan velvet front panel and a brown satin-weave fabric backing, which is hand-sewn and stuffed to function as a decorative wall hanging or pincushion. The decorative elements utilize the raised beadwork technique, where glass seed beads are layered to create a three-dimensional effect. The front features a central circular beaded medallion of clear glass seed beads and two stylized leaf or fan motifs on the upper lobes. One motif is executed in amber and gold-toned glass seed beads, while the other uses emerald green beads; both motifs are accented with dark faceted glass bugle beads. A border composed of multiple rows of clear glass seed beads follows the heart's perimeter. A beaded hanging loop, consisting of clear and green glass seed beads, is attached to the top lobes. The bottom apex is finished with several small decorative beaded loops. No maker's marks or signatures are present. Identification is based on established cultural motifs and construction methods typical of Mohawk or Tuscarora beadwork from the Niagara Falls region.
