National Cash Register Company Model 542 Mechanical Cash Register - This antique mechanical cash register was manufactured by The National Cash Register Company (NCR) in Dayton, Ohio, with a serial number indicating production circa 1912. The unit features an ornate cast housing decorated with the dolphin and scrollwork pattern. The housing is mounted on a quarter-sawn oak base which contains a single pull-out cash drawer. A white marble coin slab is positioned at the base of the key assembly. The machine is configured with five rows of vertical keys: one row for dollar amounts from $10 to $400, two rows for cent denominations from 1 to 99, a row for clerk or department identifiers (A, B, D, E, and H), and a row for transaction types including on account, charge, and no sale. The register includes a top-mounted glass signage display with pointing hand graphics and a receipt printer mechanism located on the right flank. Markings include a brass plate on the drawer face reading The National Cash Register Co, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. and a model/serial plate located above the keys stamped with serial number 1125833 and model number 542.
