Wilhelm Schiller and Son Bohemian Majolica Relief Urn Model 8970 - A large glazed earthenware urn on a flared pedestal base, manufactured by Wilhelm Schiller and Son of Obergrund, Bohemia. The central body features a narrative frieze in high relief set against a stippled gold-tone background, depicting scenes of 16th-century exploration and Spanish Conquistadors. One side displays armored soldiers wearing morion helmets and carrying pikes and muskets, while the reverse shows galleon ships at a coastal landing site with figures on the shore. The neck, foot, and handles are finished in contrasting cobalt and light blue glazes with molded stylized acanthus leaf and geometric border motifs. The twin ornate handles are formed by interlocking rings and scrolling foliate elements, terminating at the shoulder in blue-glazed bearded masks. The underside of the base features impressed marks including the manufacturer stamp W S & S within a scrolling cartouche, a circular mark containing the letters E B, and the model number 8970. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
