Large Chinese Underglaze Blue and Copper Red Foliated Porcelain Charger - A large Chinese porcelain charger featuring a foliated pie crust rim. The interior center is decorated in underglaze blue and copper-red with a pair of birds perched on a flowering branch. The cavetto and exterior are painted with scrolling floral and fruit sprays, including peaches and pomegranates. The porcelain exhibits a pale celadon-tinted glaze. The base is marked with a ring of ten Chinese characters in underglaze blue: 大明宣德皇帝年製 (Da Ming Xuan De Huang Di Nian Zhi). This is an apocryphal mark intended to reference the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty; the circular arrangement of the mark is characteristic of late 19th to mid-20th century production.
