Late Edo to Meiji Period Japanese Black Lacquer Narrative Stationery Box - A Japanese black lacquer stationery or pencil box, known as a fudebako, dating from the late nineteenth century. The rectangular wooden box features a black lacquer finish on the exterior and interior surfaces. The hinged lid is decorated with a hand-painted narrative scene executed in polychrome and gold pigments. The scene depicts five figures in traditional Japanese dress set against a stylized landscape. The central figure is seated within a large wooden tub or barrel that is being pulled and pushed by others. The interior of the box is divided into three long, narrow compartments and one small rectangular well, designed to hold writing brushes, pens, and ink stones. A simple metal stud catch is mounted on the front to secure the lid. Width: 3.5 inches Length: Approximately 8.75 inches. In-house shipping is available. Alternate pickup day is available by appointment for a $5 fee per lot or we will provide in-house shipping for this item.
