19th Century American Empire Mahogany Architectural Wall Mirror - An antique American Empire architectural wall mirror dating to the mid-19th century, approximately 1830 to 1850. The piece features a mahogany and mahogany-veneered frame with a two-part mirror plate divided by a central horizontal wood muntin. The architectural design includes a prominent projecting molded cornice above a wide frieze panel showcasing book-matched flame mahogany veneers. The mirror glass is flanked by split-turned columns with spiral-carved barley twist centers and ring-turned ends. These columns terminate in square blocks, each set with a decorative cast-metal rosette boss featuring a star and concentric circle motif. The reverse retains its original pine backboards with a handwritten mark in black ink reading J S & J B and several 19th-century newspaper fragments used as structural reinforcements. Transcribed text from these fragments includes Daily Advertiser, Morning April 21, and references to a Young Democratic Club as well as geographical locations including Charleston, Alexandria, and Savannah. 41 inches x 19 inches.
