Edward Hicks 'The Falls of Niagara' Framed Museum Reproduction Print - A large-format museum reproduction print of the 1825 American Folk Art painting 'The Falls of Niagara' by Edward Hicks (1780–1849). The central landscape depicts a panoramic view of the falls from a foreground populated by a stag, a beaver, and a snake coiled at the base of a twisted tree. The central image is surrounded by a wide border with gold-printed poetic verses. The top border reads: ”Above, below, where'er the astonished eye / Turns to behold, new opening wonders lie, ”. The bottom border reads: ”Rises on our view, amid a crashing roar / That bids us kneel, and Time's great God adore.”. The left vertical border reads: ”With uproar hideous first the Falls appear, / The stunning tumult thundering on the ear.”. The right vertical border reads: ”This great o'erwhelming work of awful Time / In all its dread magnificence sublime, ”. The corners are marked ”The Falls”, ”of Niagara”, ”18”, and ”25”. The print surface is finished with a simulated crackelure texture intended to replicate the appearance of an aged oil-on-canvas original. The piece is housed under glass within a beveled wood frame with a gold-tone inner lip and a neutral-toned mat. The verso features two labels: a Metropolitan Museum of Art descriptive label for the original painting (gift of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch, 1962) and a gallery label from Graphics Gallery Ltd. at The Barn, Marion, Ohio. 34 x 39 in.
