An Efficiency Medal (GVIR 1st type) with MILITIA subsidiary title, named to: 3299072 Sgln J A McCuish R Signals. John Alexander McCuish was born in 1900 in Plantation, Glasgow. His Army number (3299072) is a Highland Light Infantry (HLI) number, implying that he initially joined the HLI (Territorial) and later transferred to the R Signals. The Efficiency Medal with the Militia title was awarded for service in the Militia and the Supplementary Reserve. The British Army's Supplementary Reserve (SR) was a force intended to bolster the regular army in times of war. It was formed in 1924 to train men who could be called up in the event of war and in the case of R Signals provided technical officers and men to reinforce regular units on mobilisation, and also complete units for the field force, mainly for deployment in the rear areas. GHQ Signals (SR), to which Sgln McCuish probably belonged, was based in Glasgow, with a company in Edinburgh. The rates of pay for members of the SR were higher than for the Territorial Army which may be why McCuish transferred from the HLI to R Signals.
