Bidspirit auction | A Canada General Service Medal
A Canada General Service Medal 1866-70, with clasp Fenian Raid 1866; named to: 636 Pte H Butfield 4 Bt Rif Bde. The 4 th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade provided the largest element of the British troops involved in repelling the first Fenian invasion of Canada in June 1866. The medals were authorised retrospectively in 1899 and 175 medals with this clasp were awarded to the Battalion. The great majority of the total medals issued for the campaigns in Canada went to Canadian personnel with only just over 800 to Imperial troops, making this a relatively scarce issue to a British light infantry regiment. Pte Henry Butfield also served in India and is entitled to the India General Service Medal 1854 with clasp Jowaki. With copy of manuscript medal roll, recording his home address in Clapham Junction and ‘Medals Claim Board’ documents indicating that this medal was claimed in 1903. Extremely Fine (EF).
