A pair of medals consisting of: The Egypt and Sudan Medal (undated reverse) with clasp ‘Gemaizah 1888’ named to: 518 Pte J Ayres 1st Welsh Rgt, and the Khedives Bronze Star, undated issue, indented on reverse ‘WEL 518 ‘. Jesse Ayres was born in Kentishbeare, Devon in 1863. A shoemaker by trade, he enlisted in the 1st Battalion the Welch Regiment on 28 August 1883. He served in Egypt from 26/08/1886 – 28/08/1889 and took part in the engagement at Gemaizah on 20 December 1888 in which the Mahdist attempt to invade Egypt was defeated by the British force. He also served in Malta from 29/08/1889 to 05/04/1891 and was discharged on completion of his engagement on 26/08/1895. The silver medal is dark toned and with Moderate pitting from contact with the star, as is usual with these awards; otherwise Very Fine (VF) condition. With copies of extract from service record and medal roll confirming his entitlement to the medals.
