An Ashanti War Medal 1873-4, with clasp Coomassie, named to: 214 Pte A McIntosh 42nd Highlanders 1873-4. The campaign of 1873-4 against the Ashantis under King Kofi was regarded as a model of British military organisation and method of the time, and established the reputation for efficiency of its commander, Major General Sir Garnet Wolseley, who went on to later become the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. The 42nd Highlanders (The Black Watch) distinguished itself by spearheading the final attack which led to the capture of the Ashanti capital, Coomassie. Lance Sergeant Samuel McGaw of the 42nd was awarded the Victoria Cross for his conduct during this engagement. There is an EK to the obverse rim at 7 o’clock; otherwise Good Very Fine (GVF) condition.
