A South Africa Medal 1834-53, named to: H Wood Rl Saprs & Minrs (Royal Sappers and Miners). Pte Henry Wood served with the 10th Company Royal Sappers & Miners in the Second Kaffir War (or Seventh Frontier War) of 1846-47. (Note: the word ‘Kaffir’ is of Arabic origin, meaning ‘unbeliever’ and was widely used at the time to refer to the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa who, in the case of this campaign, were predominantly the Xhosa, who were the dominant group in the region). The Royal Sappers & Miners were amalgamated with the Royal Engineers in 1856, to form the Corps of Royal Engineers. Good very Fine (GVF) condition.
