Signed lower right.Bui Xuan Phai (1920-1988), widely regarded as the most celebrated Vietnamese modern painter, trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine. He is famous for his intimate depictions of Hanoi's Old Quarter streetscapes and portraits of cheo opera performers. He was posthumously awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize in 1996.
