Bidspirit auction | An Abyssinia Medal 1868, named
An Abyssinia Medal 1868, named to: 1426 F Smith, 26 th Regt (post-Childers, the First Battalion the Cameron Highlanders). 1426 Pte Francis Smith, 26 th Foot, also noted as Frederick Smith, served in the Abyssinia Campaign of 1868 and also in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, being entitled to the South Africa Medal 1877-9 with clasp ‘1879’, whilst serving with the 94 th Foot. He is recorded stationed at Fyzabad, India, in 1871, serving with the 26 th Foot, and later stationed at Aldershot with the 94 th Foot. The 94 th Foot amalgamated with the 88 th Foot in 1881 to form the Connaught Rangers. The Abyssinia Medal, which is of a unique design, includes a characteristically weak method of attaching the medal to its suspension. As a result, many of these medals offered for sale exhibit a repair to the suspension, sometimes quite crude, which detracts from its intrinsic appeal. This example, however, features the original intact suspension as originally assembled and is therefore in particularly fine (GVF) condition. With regard to provenance, this medal was part of the ‘Jubilee’ Collection sold by Glendinnings in London on 27 May 1992. With copy extract from medal roll.
