Karpov Andrey (1959.)
Born in the city of Tula. After school he entered the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. After receiving a diploma, he worked in a secret research institute. Once a young specialist was not allowed to rest in Bulgaria - because of secrecy. Then Karpov submitted a letter of resignation. Just then, an offer was received to go on a hack job in the city of Kagalym - to paint a wall on the theme “Youth and the North”. In ten days, he painted two hundred square meters. They paid as much as they did not earn in a year at the research institute. Since then, I firmly decided to earn a living exclusively by creativity.
He quickly found his own unique style, which critics called intellectual primitivism, and at the same time the characters - ordinary people from the Russian province of the times of the USSR, not burdened with intelligence and concern for their appearance. They do not pursue diversity, but are content with what the state offers them. Therefore, everyone is fat, half-asleep and with indifferently absent faces. In his search, the artist relied primarily on the impressions of childhood, the life of the Russian provinces, the mythology of a simple Soviet man.
Karpov spent the 90s in the famous commune of artists in Furmanny Lane, where something like a school arose around him. A certain part of colleagues suddenly abruptly began to churn out works “under Karpov”. From here, from Furmanny, he often traveled abroad with his works - only in America he visited twenty times. Exhibited both alone and together with such titans as Botero, Morandi, Chagall, Picasso. On one of his trips, he was accompanied by a film crew from the Popular Science Film Studio. The result was the essay documentary A Season in Seattle (1994).
