A Pair of Javanese Style Carved Volcanic Stone Figures - A pair of small, provincial-style stone sculptures carved from porous grey volcanic andesite stone, likely originating from Indonesia. The left figure depicts a squatting character resembling a guardian or minor deity such as a yaksha, featuring rounded proportions, a rounded belly, and a crown-style headdress. The hands are positioned at the midsection, holding an indistinct offering or object. The right figure is depicted in a cross-legged meditative pose, or padmasana, seated on a low integral base. This figure is carved in high relief against a rounded back stele and has the hands brought together in an anjali mudra prayer gesture. The stylized features and proportions reflect regional Javanese folk interpretations of earlier Hindu-Buddhist central Javanese styles. The undersides are covered in felt padding.
