A Pair of Chinese Chased Brass Vases with Deer and Floral Motifs, Late 19th to Early 20th Century - A matching pair of ovoid-shaped brass vases, likely produced by the Wan Bao Tang workshop during the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period. Each vase is decorated in high relief with a narrative scene featuring a leaping deer amidst the Three Friends of Winter (pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms), which are traditional Chinese symbols of longevity and fortitude. The upper shoulders are decorated with a register of stylized cloud scrolls, while the lower section transitions into a rhythmic wavy water border. The surface details indicate a combination of casting and manual hand-chasing to define the floral and animal elements. The underside of each vase features a raised circular seal mark in archaic seal script (zhuanshu) centered on a 卍 (wan) symbol. The mark reads 卍宝堂加造 (Wan Bao Tang Jia Zao), which translates to Made by the Wanbao Workshop. Height: 5.5 inches Width: 5 inches.
