A Trio of Indonesian Wayang Orang Carved Wood Dance Masks - A set of three hand-carved and polychrome painted wooden theatrical masks from Java, Indonesia, intended for Wayang Orang (Wayang Wong) dance drama. Each mask is constructed in two parts with an articulated lower jaw secured by leather straps to facilitate movement during performance. The trio includes a buff-colored mask featuring exaggerated white teeth and a wide red mouth; a reddish-brown mask with a painted mustache and a piece of hide attached to the forehead; and a sage green mask with bulging eyes and applied white fiber forming bushy eyebrows and a mustache. The interior of the buff mask bears a white adhesive label with the handwritten inscription: MASKS FOR USE IN WAYANG ORANG WHICH HUMAN PUPPETS. The interior of the green mask retains a vintage commercial paper label from a souvenir shop on Jalan Cihampelas (Dj. Tjihampelas) in Bandung, West Java, showing a handwritten price in Indonesian Rupiah. Individual Mask: 7.5 to 8 inches high x 5.5 to 6 inches wide Overall Grouping Width: 16 inches.
