Carington Bowles Hand Colored Engraved Map of New England - A hand colored copperplate engraving titled Bowles s New Pocket Map of the Most Inhabited Part of New England. The map was published in London by Carington Bowles at No. 69 St. Paul s Church Yard. It provides a detailed cartographic representation of the provinces of Massachusetts Bay and New Hampshire and the colonies of Connecticut and Rhode Island divided into counties and townships. An inset in the lower right corner features a Plan of Boston with its Harbour and Environs while a References key in the lower center left lists harbor defenses. The map includes a compass rose and hand applied watercolor washes in shades of pink yellow and green. It is mounted in a dark stained wood frame with a paper backing that has a handwritten notation reading 1780 New England. Frame: 17.5 x 22.5 inches Visible Sheet: 15.25 x 20.25 inches.
