Large Japanese Meiji Period Shibayama Style Inlay Lacquer Panel with Carved Phoenix Frame - A large Japanese decorative panel or standing screen known as a tsuitate, dating to the Meiji period. The piece features a central lacquer panel with high relief Shibayama style inlay using materials including mother-of-pearl, abalone, and carved bone. The central motif depicts a large bird of prey, possibly a hawk, with varied feather tones perched on a blossoming plum or cherry branch carved from bone. A smaller bird is shown in flight below the main branch. The background is a dark lacquer that transitions to a deeper red toward the outer perimeter. The panel is set within an elaborate dark-stained hardwood frame, possibly rosewood, featuring deep relief openwork carving. The frame includes horizontal panels depicting phoenixes among peonies at the top and bottom, with vertical rails carved in continuous floral and foliate scrolls. The reverse side is finished in black with a small central inlaid bird and floral sprig. The item retains its original metal casters at the feet and has been fitted with modern metal mounting hardware on the reverse for wall display.
