Charak Furniture Co. Serpentine Mahogany Slant-Front Secretary Desk - A 20th-century Chippendale-style mahogany secretary desk manufactured by the Charak Furniture Co. The desk is constructed with a serpentine front and features highly figured flame mahogany veneers on the slant-front lid. The fall-front lid opens to a well-fitted interior prospect containing a central cupboard door with a carved sunburst motif, flanked by two turned pilaster-fronted document drawers. The interior also includes eight vertical pigeonhole compartments and four small serpentine-fronted drawers with wooden pull knobs. Two manual pull-out slides support the writing surface when open. The lower case consists of four graduated serpentine-fronted drawers, each fitted with decorative brass batwing-style bail handles. The piece is supported by bold, hand-carved claw-and-ball feet. The reverse of the desk bears a stamped mark near the top center: O. F. CO. - 90. 42 inches H x 36 inches W x 19 inches D.
