Amarante – In red, LF AMT3, on an undated letter from Amarante to Lisbon, with rate of 40 réis handwritten in red, corresponding to a letter weighing up to 2 oitavas for the 5th distance (more than 40 leagues). Well-preserved copy, without damage or repairs, with a slightly damaged stamp. Letter addressed by a Portuguese faithful to Francisco de Almeida Portugal, Count of Lavradio, who spent his youth in Brazil, where he studied agriculture and botany at the University of Rio de Janeiro. There he began his diplomatic career (1818), with his appointment as Counsellor to the embassy in Madrid and, a year later, in Paris. Returning to Portugal in 1825, he was invited by the Infanta Regent D. Isabel Maria to take up the Foreign Affairs portfolio the following year. At the same time, he was also appointed State Councillor and Deputy during the 1826–1828 legislative session.
