Mozambique Company * Postage * 1919 – Elephants. Cover sent, by sea from Wolverhampton (02.02.28) to Beira (29.02.28) franked with 2 ½ p.m. to pay the first rate of ordinary mail. Due to excess weight, the rate should have been 4p to pay the second rate for a letter up to 2oz, but it was rate doubled, with a shortfall of 1 ½ p, corresponding to 30c of gold franc, equivalent to 1$60 (double $80 corresponding to the 2nd rate of the Portuguese table), converted in Beira to 8c of gold pound from the Bank of Beira, paid with stamps affixed to the back of the Cover of 2c, reddish-brown, perforated 15 + 6c, yellowish-brown, perforated 14 + 6c, yellowish-brown, perforated 14, all on dotted paper, MF POR33a and POR36, totaling 8c, at the rate of 20 centavos for each 1c of gold pound. Copies without damages or repairs, with good color. MB and MR.
