Envelope sent from South Africa, presumably rate-free, marked with a red stamp “THE SOUTH AFRICAN / RED CROSS SOCIETY, via the Portuguese Red Cross,” with a red elliptical stamp dated 15.11.1941 on the reverse, which in turn forwarded to its destination in Holland with a 1$75 stamp, MF598, to pay the first rate for a letter abroad, with the Lisbon date stamp (17.11.41). Censored by the British and Germans, with the respective bands. Scheme for sending mail between South Africa and occupied Europe, via the Portuguese Red Cross, operating in both directions.
