India * 1914/18 – World War I * German prisoners of war interned in the Artillery Barracks in Panjim. 1911 – D. Carlos I Mouchon, with the “REPUBLICA” overprint from the Mint. MF210, 4T, blue on blue, smooth paper, 11 ¾ perforation. Isolated copy in a registered circulated envelope from Nova Goa (??.09.16) to Zurich (03.11.16) with transit through Lisbon (26.10.16), to pay the first rate for a letter abroad weighing up to 15g and the registration fee. Opened by censorship in Panjim and closed with a white band bearing the double inscription “PORTUGUESE INDIA / MILITARY POSTAL CENSORSHIP” and a rectangular stamp from the Indian censorship, doubly stamped in green on the obverse and reverse “PORTUGUESE INDIA / CENSORED (3) / MILITARY CENSORSHIP”. Letter sent by the Austro-Hungarian prisoner Deodato Bogdan Dabovich, helmsman of the ship Verwaerts renamed ”INDIA”, which belonged to the Austrian Lloyd Company based in Trieste. B and R. Initially, prisoners of war in this camp did not have exemption from rate, unlike the camps of Bicholim and Aguada which enjoyed this privilege. Very well preserved.
