India * 1914/18 – World War I * German prisoners of war interned in the Artillery Barracks in Panjim. Registered circulated envelope from Nova Goa (July 19, 1916) to Geneva (December 12, 1916) with transit through Lisbon (September 11, 1916) with Ceres type stamps of 9 réis, ultramarine blue and 10 réis, carmine, both on chalky paper, perforated 15x14, stars II/II, MF252 and 266; stamp of 2 ½ réis, brown-yellow, type D. Carlos I Mouchon, with overprint “REPUBLICA” from the Mint, MF203 and 1 ½ réis, green-blue, type Centenary of India, with overprint “REPUBLICA”, and a PERIDOS STAMP. Double censored with a French censorship band and a rectangular Indian censorship stamp, stamped in green “PORTUGUESE INDIA / CENSORED (3) / MILITARY CENSORSHIP”. Sent through the Portuguese Red Cross, it was stamped with a rate exemption stamp, with an overcharge from the Portuguese Prisoner of War Commission. Initially, prisoners of war in this camp did not have rate exemption, unlike the Bicholim and Aguada camps which enjoyed this privilege.
