Lt Cdr R McC(Mac ) Samples Survivor Observer W5907 One cannon shell hits their aircraft immediately behind the pilot and explodes, wounding both Kingsmill and the observer 'Mac' Samples. Failing to line up the first time, the pilot turns for a second run through the intense flak. Whilst Samples is wounded again, their torpedo is released from about 2, 000 yards. Group Captain T. P. Shot down and grievously burned, August 31st 1940 whilst defending RAF Biggin Hill, Commanded RAF Manston October 5th 1941 to April 13th 1942. at the time of the attack on the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.
